New Inter-Organizational Processes and Dynamics in Washtenaw Country

The conference brought together University faculty and local human services leadership to examine some of these challenges, focusing on questions such as the following:
  • How does one work to achieve collective purposes and at the same time ensure the well being of one’s own organization?
  • Are there downsides to collaboration?
  • If so, how are they taken into account and what costs do they impose?

The conference involved brief presentations and group dialogue and conversation.

Assessing the Financial Health of Nonprofit Organizations

Guest Speaker: Dione Alexander, Detroit Site Director, Nonprofit Finance Fund. The Nonprofit Finance Fund (NFF) is a national leader in financing nonprofits, strengthening their financial health and improving their capacity to serve their communities. With NFF's help, nonprofits across the country build and renovate facilities, fund growth needs, and expand and sustain operations over time.

Dione Alexander, Detroit Site Director, discussed how to discern financial strength and weakness in a nonprofit organization. Ms. Alexander has oversight of lending and consulting services, foundation and corporate relations, business development, and community outreach for a region that includes much of the Midwest.

Hurricane Katrina: The Disaster of Recovery

Guest Speaker: Pamela Jenkins from the University of New Orleans. Katrina made landfall on August 29, 2005. Over two years later, the lived experience of survivors and the community are still in flux. Dr. Jenkins focused her talk on the meaning of disaster and recovery in New Orleans, with special emphasis on the role of the public and nonprofit sectors. This event was Co-sponsored by the Nonprofit and Public Management Center and the Ross SGA, and presented by Arts Enterprise.

Global Impact Speaker Series

Guest speaker: Alcely Barroso of Microsoft. She has been working with social and economic development issues for over six years. She began as a professor in a private university in São Paulo and later became responsible for managing social development projects, extra-curricular activities and was assistant to the Dean for Social Responsibility issues. Co-sponsored by the William Davidson Institute.

Guest speaker: Maria Teresa Leal from Coopa-RocaCoopa-Roca, a sewing cooperative in Rocinha, Brazil— the largest slum in Latin America. The cooperative has grown to over 150 women employees and has received commissions from Brazilian fashion designers Osklen and Carlos Miele, as well as British designer Paul Smith. Co-sponsored by the William Davidson Institute.
