Self-Directed Internship Opportunities

The Nonprofit and Public Management Center provides internship support for students pursuing graduate degrees in the schools of Business, Public Policy and Social Work. Each spring NPM awards stipends to graduate students who will be serving summer internships in nonprofit and public management positions.

To apply for 2008 summer internship support, please complete the application and submit this via email to nonprofit@umich.edu. The deadline to apply is April 1, 2008 and recipients will be notified by April 15, 2008. For more information, please view the application instructions.

Internship Support Awardees for 2007

The Nonprofit and Public Management Center is pleased to support the following students who served internships in nonprofit and public organizations during the summer of 2007.

From the School of Social Work:

Shannon Adrzejewski, an MSW/School of Public Health student, interned with the Hannan Foundation of Detroit, whose mission is to enhance the quality of life for senior citizens in Detroit and the Detroit Metropolitian area.

Shanondora Billiot, an MSW student, interned with the Foundation for Sustainable Development, an organization that collaborates with over 160 non-governmental organizations in Latin America, East Africa and South Asia to raise awareness of the economic challenges in developing countries.

Leslie Bouldes, an MSW student, worked with the Women's Center of Southeastern Michigan, dedicated to the emotional and economic self-determination of women and girls through personal counseling, financial education, legal seminars and job coaching.

Sheryl Buddan, an MSW student, interned at the Women's Initiative, whose mission is assisting high-potential, low-income women who dream of business ownership, particularly focusing on the needs of minorities, immigrants and welfare recipients.

Sarah Gallagher, an MSW student, interned with the State of Michigan's Department of Human Services, in the Office of Child Support, to create a program to encourage positive and productive communication between the Friend of the Court and Child Protective Services.

Lynnette McRae, an MSW student, interned at the Lawndale Christian Development Corporation, a faith-based Chicago organization whose mission is to bring change through community development via affordable housing, commercial development, youth development, education, employment and prisoner reentry.

Monica Sheftel, an MSW student, worked with The Corner Health Center, an Ypsilanti, Michigan organization that provides medical care, health education and support service to low-income young people between 12 and 21 years of age, and their children.

From the Ross School of Business:

Andrew Davis, an MBA student, worked at Ashoka, a global association of the world's leading social entrepreneurs, to develop a new program called Entrepreneur to Entrepreneur to connect business entrepreneurs with social entrepreneurs.

John Gearen, an MBA/School of Natural Resources student, interned with Acumen Fund, a global venture fund that uses entrepreneurial approaches to solve the problems of global poverty.

Amy Goodman, an MBA/MPP student, interned at the Crittenton Women's Union, formed after the merger of two historic Boston organizations to support low-income women and families on their path towards economic self-sufficiency through services such as housing, education, workforce development, family support services and research and advocacy.

Gabriel Thoumi, an MBA/School of Natural Resources student, interned with World Wildlife Fund Indonesia, developing corporate engagement strategies to eliminate illegal coffee production from destroying tiger, elephant and rhinoceros habitat and entering the supply chain to internationally known coffee companies.

From the Ford School of Public Policy:

Naomi Goldberg, an MPP student, worked with Keshet-Boston, an organization that seeks to create a fully welcoming and inclusive Jewish community for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) Jews in Greater Boston.

Cynthia Koenig, an MPP/School of Natural Resources student, worked with Hippo Water Roller, a South African organization committed to tranforming water collection from a chore that must be performed several times a day to only a few times a week by rolling 20 gallons of water instead of carrying 5 gallons on the head.

Katherine Redman, an MPP/JD student, interned with the City of Ann Arbor, Michigan's Office of the Ann Arbor City Attorney, which performs all legal work for the city, focusing on the Greenbelt Program and issues related to zoning and economic development.

Matthew Singer, an MPP student, interned with the City of New York, New York's Parks and Recreation Department's Office of Management and Budget, focusing on projects to add wireless internet access at the parks, plus monitor and evaluate the Parks Department's employment program and the Computer Resource Centers.
